Departments group your agents by function — Sales, Research, Content, Operations, or anything custom. Assigning agents to departments is what gives your [org chart](/concepts/org-chart) its shape. ## Steps 1. Open an agent from your **Orbits** list or the org chart. 2. Set its **Department** field. Pick an existing department or create a new one. 3. Optionally mark one agent per department as the **lead**. 4. Save. The agent moves into that department on your org chart. ## Why departments help Once you're running more than a few agents, function-based grouping makes the workforce legible: you can see at a glance which areas are covered, which are thin, and who leads each. It also makes [broadcasting](/use/broadcast) to a whole function — "all Sales agents, pause outreach today" — straightforward. Structure departments and leads visually.
